Troy and Paula Haag

Born in Hawaii, Troy spent his early years overseas where he was exposed to music of all genres from many different cultures. After returning to the States, his family settled in Loudoun County, Virginia. His musical education started on the drums, moved to the violin but finally settled on the guitar. He began seriously playing guitar and writing songs in High School where Dylan and the Beatles were early influences. This was the beginning of a lifelong obsession.Paula was born in South Carolina into a military family. Her family roots are deep in Warren County, Virginia, where her family name is common among some of the original Scotch-Irish settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. Her grandfather and great-grandfather played the fiddle and banjo in bands that, in her great grandfather’s case, pre-dated “Bluegrass”. She remembers singing and dancing with her grandmother while her grandfather’s band played in the front parlor. At one time or another, she has played the piano, clarinet, dabbled in guitar and various pieces of hand percussion. As a husband and wife duo, Troy and Paula Haag brought all of this to bear and began to write and sing together: sitting around the kitchen table where all great endeavors seem to start. Their recording debut was a cover of the Jayhawk’s song “Trouble” for the official fan page tribute, Standing in the Wings. However, it has always been about their original songs.

Their debut CD, The Century, is characterized by a love of acoustic textures, harmony and a desire to “cut to the chase” lyrically. They write and sing about family, loss, the Great Hereafter, the natural world and the nature of love. They are also the founding members of the electric, eclectic, rock band Magick Kat.
